The truth about Sera’s plan is out, shattering the fragile trust forged between her and Nyktos. Surrounded by those distrustful of her, all Sera has is her duty. She will do anything to end Kolis, the false King of Gods, and his tyrannical rule of Iliseeum, thus stopping the threat he poses to the mortal realm.

Nyktos has a plan, though, and as they work together, the last thing they need is the undeniable, scorching passion that continues to ignite between them. Sera cannot afford to fall for the tortured Primal, not when a life no longer bound to a destiny she never wanted is more attainable than ever. But memories of their shared pleasure and unrivaled desire are a siren’s call impossible to resist.

And as Sera begins to realize that she wants to be more than a Consort in name only, the danger surrounding them intensifies. The attacks on the Shadowlands are increasing, and when Kolis summons them to Court, a whole new risk becomes apparent. The Primal power of Life is growing inside her, pushing her closer to the end of her Culling. And without Nyktos’s love—an emotion he’s incapable of feeling—she won’t survive her Ascension. That is if she even makes it to her Ascension and Kolis doesn’t get to her first. Because time is running out. For both her and the realms.

Add on [goodreads]
#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns with book one of the all-new, compelling Flesh and Fire series—set in the beloved Blood and Ash world.

Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers. Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort.

However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania—she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission—one target. Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then…end him. If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot.

Sera has always known what she is. Chosen. Consort. Assassin. Weapon. A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood. A monster. Until him. Until the Primal of Death’s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her. And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him. But Sera has never had a choice. Either way, her life is forfeit—it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death.

Captivating and action-packed, From Blood and Ash is a sexy, addictive, and unexpected fantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Laura Thalassa.

A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

Is Love Stronger Than Vengeance?

A Betrayal…

Everything Poppy has ever believed in is a lie, including the man she was falling in love with. Thrust among those who see her as a symbol of a monstrous kingdom, she barely knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. But what she does know is that nothing is as dangerous to her as him. The Dark One. The Prince of Atlantia. He wants her to fight him, and that’s one order she’s more than happy to obey. He may have taken her, but he will never have her.

A Choice….

Casteel Da’Neer is known by many names and many faces. His lies are as seductive as his touch. His truths as sensual as his bite. Poppy knows better than to trust him. He needs her alive, healthy, and whole to achieve his goals. But he’s the only way for her to get what she wants—to find her brother Ian and see for herself if he has become a soulless Ascended. Working with Casteel instead of against him presents its own risks. He still tempts her with every breath, offering up all she’s ever wanted. Casteel has plans for her. Ones that could expose her to unimaginable pleasure and unfathomable pain. Plans that will force her to look beyond everything she thought she knew about herself—about him. Plans that could bind their lives together in unexpected ways that neither kingdom is prepared for. And she’s far too reckless, too hungry, to resist the temptation.

A Secret…

But unrest has grown in Atlantia as they await the return of their Prince. Whispers of war have become stronger, and Poppy is at the very heart of it all. The King wants to use her to send a message. The Descenters want her dead. The wolven are growing more unpredictable. And as her abilities to feel pain and emotion begin to grow and strengthen, the Atlantians start to fear her. Dark secrets are at play, ones steeped in the blood-drenched sins of two kingdoms that would do anything to keep the truth hidden. But when the earth begins to shake, and the skies start to bleed, it may already be too late.

Review:

As always, my first disclaimer is that if you haven't read Blood and Ash series or the first book of the Fire and Flesh series, you better not check my review in case I do spoil something from these books. I would also add that if you are starting these series, be sure to check out the reading order (just check the release date of each book and read them in that order and yes, it’s a mix between both series) because it just helps making sense of a few events.

Okay first word to describe A Light in the Flame? OMG! Technically it’s three words, but you know what I mean.

This book was simply amazing and so well written. I love reading about this world and making the connections with the Blood and Ash series as well.

I will tell you this right now… this book will break and heal you all through it because that’s how Jen rolls. She will give us more than likely a HEA at the end of the series, but she will enjoy making us suffer until we do get there. I’m not sure how many more books are planned into this series, but I know that she will break us and then heal us over and over again.

The story continues where we were left off in A Shadow in the Ember and Sera and Nyktos are dealing with the aftermath of what they have learned. To say the least, nothing is easy in that book; and I can’t tell you just how often I was on the edge of my seat wondering what the next chapter was going to bring.

Sera and Nyktos have grown so much in this book in a way. They are both mature characters, but I felt that the both of them have grown more into knowing what their worth is. I can’t explain just how invested I am into their relationship and whatever happens to them, I feel for them, and I will admit that they broke my heart a few times in this book, but they also made me giddy with happiness. Their chemistry is also off the chart and so much is going on with them and around them and I feel like it intensifies everything about how they handle each other and their problems.

The Drakens are still amazing characters, Nektas, Jadis, Reaver… I can’t explain just how much they entertain me in this book. If I’m honest, Nektas reminds me so much of Kieran from the Blood and Ash series with how he acts; he is just as fiercely loyal and just as nonchalant as Kieran. Perhaps that may be one of the reasons I like this character so much and the littles ones just put some sunshine in these books.

New characters are introduced and as usual, you will never know what to think of any of them because Jen likes to keep us on our toes about the true nature of certain characters. I will admit that I got played a few times along this series (as well as her other series let’s be honest) and sometimes, I will admit that it pained me to realize that I was wrong or right about a character.

For as long as I have been reading Jennifer L. Armentrout’s books, I have always said that the Lux series were my favorite series of hers, but now, I think it has gained the second place because Blood and Ash and Flesh and Fire series have gotten to the number one spot. I can’t recommend enough these two series.

So overall, this book is another 5 stars read for me. I’m sorry not sorry for just loving it so much. This book just had everything that I love about my books and like I said before, I am so invested in these series that I am thinking of finding a way to go live with Jen without her knowing and then sneak onto her laptop to read the next books; that is how much I need the next books.

FYI… if it took me over a month to finish it, it’s not because it wasn’t good, but more of my capacity to handle the rollercoaster of feels that Jennifer usually puts us through in her books.

I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

Review

I have no words for this book. It was such a rollercoaster of feels throughout the whole book. I apologize in advance if my review does not make any sense.

Also, be sure to have read all of the other books before reading my review because it might contain spoilers from the previous books.

So the book continues more or less where the last book left us; Casteel imprisoned by Isbeth and Poppy trying to get him back. It was a hard to wait to see what was going to happen next because as much as Jen is all for Happily Ever Afters, we all know that what happens between the start and the end is fair game and she will for sure play with our feels throughout it.

This series is no exception to that and my god do you go through every possible feels. I honestly do not know where to start my review.

So let’s start with just how the bond between Poppy and Kieran grew throughout this book; the way they interacted and the way they anchor each other in Casteel’s absence. I really feel like that since the beginning, they always had a special bond even when they didn’t seem to really know it and I felt like that goes beyond the bond she has with the wolvens.

Poppy is just as fierce as before and she has so much more confidence in herself and she won’t back down from what she believes is right. Honestly, the way she held herself we sometimes we forget that she is young and that not long ago, she was sheltered and was mostly oblivious to the truth.

Having Casteel’s point of view was also just an added bonus to the story. I love being in Poppy’s mind, but I am not going to lie, I wanted to be in Casteel’s head too. I really felt it added to the story and it got us to feel just how intensely he felt about Poppy and all the thoughts and memories that could through his mind. In addition, I really felt like having both point of views just gave place to have more information thrown at us.

Poppy and Casteel. These two together are just almost perfect; they loved each other with something fierce and they are ready to do just about anything for one another.

And what can I say about the newest addition to this group… Reaver (or since the book A Shadow in the Ember in the Flesh and Fire series (aka ASITE), Reaver-Butt). I seriously love him. His banters with Kieran were quite entertaining and I loved just how nonchalant he seems to be most of the time.

So much is learned throughout this book and a lot is answered from things were wondered in the previous books. I swear, I felt like every other chapter, we learned something new and I loved it because sometimes I felt like it made some stuff from the previous books make more sense.

Overall, I loved that book. It kept me diving back in-between whenever I had a minute to be able to read. I once again highly recommend this book series. I can’t wait for the next books in this series and see where she’s going to make us go through next.

I was giving an advanced copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
