As an NHL player, relationships haven’t been my thing. Shrouded in secrecy and speculation, they never last very long. But then that’s what happens when you require an NDA before the first date.

Until Charlene. She’s like a firefly. She’s elusive, and if you catch her she’ll burn bright, but keeping her trapped dulls her fire and dims her beauty.

I caught her. And as much as I might want to keep her, I’ll never put the lid on her jar. Not at the risk of losing her. So I've let her set the rules in our relationship.

But as long hidden secrets expose us both, I discover exactly how fragile Charlene is, and how much I need her.

We’re all broken. We’re all messed up. Some more than others. Me more than most.

Review:

I will admit that I have a few books that I haven't read yet in this series, but since each book can still be read as a standalone, I was quite excited to plunge into this book because I really wanted to know more about Darren and Charlene's relationship. From the moment they were introduced in Pucked, I liked them and I was really hoping they would get a book or a novella or anything just to have more to read about them.

Charlene and Darren are both characters that have a heavy past behind them and they are both dealing with it in the best ways they believe they can.

I will admit that upon learning everything about them, I felt like we were finally getting to understand where both of them were coming from. They were in a relationship that worked for both of them, but I also felt like they were only beginning to understand what the other actually needed. The love was there even if neither of them was open about it unlike the rest of their friends.

But Darren and Charlene both evolve at their own pace and that was just perfect for them because they needed that time. Patience and understanding were the key words for this relationship. Neither of them dealt with it the same, but they didn’t give up on the other and simply waited even when it was hard to do so.

And I was happy that we got all past characters back once more because seriously, what this series would be without all of them? I love how the interaction with them helped Darren and Charlene but also how supportive they could be when things went in a direction no one anticipated.

I won’t lie, this book brought in a lot of surprises that I would have never suspected, but that just made this book even better. I love what can come out of Helena Hunting’s mind and you can tell that she went big with the last book of this series.

Overall, I really enjoyed the last installment of the Pucked series and it was really the best way to end it. I wouldn't looking for short stories in the future about where they all are up to, but seriously, this was just the perfect way to end things.

I was giving an advanced copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

CHARLENE

You’re turning twenty-six. It’s your champagne birthday, so we need to do something fun.” Violet bounces, making her boobs shake and my mimosa slosh perilously. “It should be themed! We can all wear leather chaps!”

“Could you be any more cliché?” I roll my eyes. “Just to be clear, Darren doesn’t own chaps.”

“Just a ball gag and a mask with no eye holes, according to Alex.”

And we’re back to my sex life. I knew I was getting off so easy.

I wonder if Darren is catching this kind of heat today. I seriously doubt it’s worse than what I’m getting since I don’t think his friends are likely to push his buttons, but I’ll have to ask when I speak to him next. I’m not sure when that will be, either. The message I sent about Gertrude was pretty straightforward and doesn’t necessarily require a response. Maybe I should’ve worded it differently.

Sunny raises her hand, like we’re all still in middle school and she’s waiting her turn to speak. “Wouldn’t a mask with no eyeholes be dangerous? You wouldn’t be able to see where you’re going.” Her eyes widen, and she looks around the room. “And what’s a ball gag?”

I honestly love that Sunny has grown up in this highly overinformed society and still manages to be innocent.

“Yeah, Char, wouldn’t a mask with no eyeholes be dangerous?” Violet props her fist on her chin and smiles. “And please, do explain what a ball gag is.”

“I’m not sure you really want the answer to that, Sunny.” Poppy gives me a look I can’t quite decipher.

Sunny twirls her hair around her finger. “Why not?”

“Where’s the harm in a little bondage-sex education? It’s not like Miller’s ever going to go out and buy either item for her. First of all, Alex would murder him, and secondly, I don’t think that’s Miller’s thing.”

Sunny’s face lights up, and she does jazz hands. “Oh! I think I know what Miller’s thing is!”

Lily grins. “Eating your cookie?”

“He really likes to do that, a lot. When my belly gets too big I’ll have to watch from the mirror.” She gets a faraway look in her eyes. “But he has another thing! Kind of like how you and Randy are always getting it on in bathrooms, except I think it’s a bit more sanitary.”

“And it doesn’t cause thousands of dollars of damage,” Violet adds.

Lily throws her hands up in the air. “That sink was already falling off the wall. It’s not my fault it broke!”

“That was one expensive orgasm,” I say.

“And Randy says it was worth every penny.” Lily’s smile is devious as she bites her knuckle, then turns to Sunny. “Anyway, back to Miller’s thing.”

Sunny wiggles around excitedly in her chair. “So Miller paints my toenails for me.”

“Miller’s thing is painting your toenails?”

“Yes. Well, no. I think he likes my toes.” Her fingers go to her lips, and she looks around the room, her cheeks flushing.

“Say what now?” Violet asks.

”Sometimes he kisses them.” She covers her mouth with her palm and says something unintelligible.

Violet sits forward in her chair. “Hold on a second, does Buck have a foot fetish?”

“Um, I don’t know.” Sunny looks worried now. “Is that weird? Is it, like, mask with no eyeholes kind of weird?”

***A Standalone novel in The Pucked Series***

I’m NHL defenseman Lance Romero, AKA Lance “Romance."

I’m notorious for parties and excess. I have the most penalty minutes in the league. I get into the most fights. I take the most hits. I’m a player on and off the ice. I’m the one women with no inhibitions want.

Not because I like the notoriety, but because I don’t know how to be any other way.

I have secrets. Ones I shared with the wrong person, and she used them against me. Sometimes she still does. I should cut ties. But she makes it difficult, because she’s the kind of bad I deserve.

At least that’s what I believed until someone from my past gets caught up in my present. She’s all the good things in this world. She lights up my dark.

I shouldn’t want her.

But I do.

I should leave her alone.

But I won’t.

Review:

Pucked Off is a quick read (it only took me longer because of work and personal issues), but you won't want to put it down.

Lance Romero has quite a reputation like many of his teammates had or have. Some of it is true, some of it isn't. Lance is a guy who has a lot of issues due to his past and it's probably why he can't let go of the one person he ought to. She is toxic and he knows it, but he can't seem to be able to refuse her. He tries as we can see in the book, but he always ends up back where he shouldn't. He doesn't believe he deserves anything good until he meets Poppy. From there, he works to become the kind of man she deserves. It's not perfect because he can't let go of the notion that he doesn't deserve her or happiness. He is broken and mending isn't an easy process.

Poppy's character is such a good person. She's a good heart and she doesn't mind going out of her way to help out someone. When Lance ends up on her massage table, she doesn't know how to react. He's the boy she crushed on in school, who broke her heart a year before and now he doesn't seem to remember her at all. As Lance pursue her, she tries a lot to remain unaffected by his presence and his attentions, but she realizes that it's a loss cause. I think it's even more harder for her to let go as he finally remembers her.

Lance and Poppy's relationship is slow coming. He's obviously trying his hardest to give her what she deserves, but she still has some reluctance; she doesn't want to get hurts. He opens up a lot more to her than he did to other people and yet, she feels he is still hiding so much from her and she doesn't know what to do with all of this. Throughout the whole book, Poppy tries to help Lance as much as he allows her to, but she's also aware that he needs to do his part to come to terms with his past.

Of course, we see characters from the previous books and you get to see where they are now. Lance's friendship with the guys will be tested during the book, especially with Miller. You can tell that the gap that occured as his friends are all starting to settle down and he continues to party. He still hangs out with them, but he can tell that something is different.

Overall, Helena Hunting's writing is as always entertaining, funny and sexy. You won't want to miss this new book in the Pucked series.

I was giving an advanced copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

Armed with my clipboard, I walk down the hall to the waiting room. Lance is impossible to miss. Despite the fact that he’s wearing a sweatshirt and the hood is covering half of his face, he’s more than six feet of broad, hockey-playing man.

He’s so wide his shoulders encroach on the chairs on either side, which would explain why no one is sitting next to him. He’s slouched down so his head rests on the back of the chair, and his hands are clasped in his lap, a baseball cap hanging off one knee. His lips, plush and soft—I know since I’ve had them on mine; it might have been a decade ago, but I remember it clearly—are parted. He looks like he’s asleep.

I clear my throat. “Lance Romero?”

He doesn’t move.

Bernadette, the receptionist, gives me a meaningful look.

I clear my throat again and call his name a second time. He jolts awake and the hood falls back, exposing his face. It’s not in good shape. He has a black eye and bruises on his left cheek. There’s a fly bandage across one eyebrow.

Sadly, he’s still hot.

He blinks a few times, yawns, and smacks his lips, his tongue touching the split in the bottom one. His gaze sweeps the room and finally lands on me. Heat explodes in my cheeks and courses through my limbs, warming me from the inside out as he starts at my sneaker-clad feet and roams up over my yoga pants to my company-issued T-shirt before stopping at my face. I can’t look directly at him for more than a couple of seconds. I sincerely hope he doesn’t remember me. I cannot go there and also be professional.

I’m sure the smile he gives me has melted many a panty off a slutty bunny. Mine stay right where they’re supposed to, wedged up my ass.

I force a polite, professional veneer. “I’m ready for you now.”
